Oceanside is currently the third largest city in San Diego County, with an approximate population of 183 095. Oceanside, Carlsbad and Vista together form a tri-city area. The busiest military base in the country, the Marine Corps Base Cape Pendleton, is situated north of the city. In 1970, the population was a mere 45,000. The huge increase in population caused the area to mostly concentrate on constructing single family home tracts between 1970 and 1990. Since then, however, the city has started to concentrate on increasing industrial and commercial development.
There are a variety of businesses and industries that have chosen to build in Oceanside. For those who wish to start up a commercial, industrial, or office-type business, the city offers incentive plans to help encourage growth. As well, the property tax is one of the lowest in the county. One of the largest sectors is the manufacturing of sporting and recreational equipment. As well, biotech and medtech companies are emerging and doing very well. Agriculture is very important to the San Diego County area and thrives in the beautiful climate. Avocados, citrus fruit, flowers, nursery stock, and tomatoes all grow extremely well here.
Oceanside is in an ideal location to build a business or to raise a family. It is able to maintain its natural beauty while still being extremely accessible to other major cities such as San Diego, which is 35 miles south of the city, and Los Angeles, which is 83 miles north. There is an abundance of land available for a reasonable price and plenty of resources left untapped.
One of the main highways, the Interstate 5, runs through the city. Highway 76 (which runs northeast) and Highway 78 (which runs southeast) both lead to the Interstate 15.
